POLICE are investigating an incident where a cyclist was allegedly attacked by a car driver in Bibury yesterday.

The incident happened at about 2.15pm on the B4425 just outside the village, according to the cyclist.

The 32-year-old cyclist, who did not want to be named, travelled from London to Bisley to see his family for two days.

Yesterday, he decided to go cycling but ended up in Cirencester Hospital with stitches after a 35-year-old car driver from Swindon pulled over and allegedly punched him in the face.

According to the cyclist, the car driver alleged that he had spat at him while passing by on his bike. He denied having ever spat at the driver.

The cyclist suffered a big cut on his lip that had to be stitched together.

The punch-up was stopped after a police constable (PC) and police community support officer (PSCO) on patrol happened to cross the scene.

There have been no arrests.

Police said that the incident is still under investigation and they have been talking to members of the public who witnessed the incident.

Sergeant Garrett Gloyn said: "It would appear that there was a road rage-type incident between a motorist and a cyclist.

"The motorist is alleged to have caught up with and stopped the cyclist. It is alleged that he struck the cyclist, causing a split lip.

"It is fortunate we were able to be there when all parties were still present.

"We will be obtaining a statement from the cyclist in due course.

"We know who the car driver is, we know where he lives and we will interview him when we have gathered the evidence.

"The priority at the time was any medical treatment for the cyclist."

When asked what prompted the car driver to punch the cyclist, PS Gloyn said: "It’s under investigation.

"I think incident started with something characterised as a road rage type dispute, so until we’ve got all testimonies, it might be a bit premature to go into detail."

Police are keen to hear from any other witnesses.
