A CAR which struck a female pedestrian in Cirencester yesterday morning was trying to reverse out of Cricklade Street, a pedestrian zone, police said.

The woman, who suffered a hip injury, was taken to hospital after being hit by a white Mercedes before 10am yesterday.

Her injuries were not thought to be serious.

Police said the Mercedes had been turning into Cricklade Street from Castle Street before the driver realised out he had entered a pedestrian zone.

The driver then tried to reverse out and knocked the woman over.

No one has been arrested or fined. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing and any possible proceedings are still being considered.

Cricklade Street has been a topic of concern for many residents as it is closed to vehicles from 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday.

But residents said they are seeing more cars enter the street illegally. Several drivers had already been fined by police for flouting the new restrictions.

Discussions are currently underway for new traffic regulations in Cricklade Street amid residents' concerns.

It is hoped that a new Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will be implemented by Gloucestershire County Council, though the process could take about a year.

The town's Cricklade Street Task and Finish Group (TFG) in April recommended an experimental order to restrict vehicle access from 10am to 4pm, seven days a week, and that this be controlled by a gate or drop-down bollard.

Gloucestershire County Council and Cirencester Town Council confirmed that discussions about proposed changes to Cricklade Street and its Traffic Regulation Order is ongoing.

The town council added that details would be released by the county council "as soon as they are able to as part of wider public consultation".
