THE Raymond Fenton Community Centre in South Cerney has been officially opened for community use.

A launch event took place on Saturday, March 18 and involved a variety of local groups and organisations.

The 400-square metre building was built as part of planning permission for the new South Cerney housing development by Redrow.

As a result, Redrow have contributed £1.2million towards the construction of the centre.

The community hall is dedicated to the life of Raymond Fenton, a South Cerney man who allowed his house to be used as a base by village groups.

The monthly village 'Cerney News' is still collated and folded on Raymond’s dining room table, while his lounge was used as a concert venue, as well as a committee meeting space.

The event on Saturday began with the ribbon-cutting by Raymond's grandchildren.

The day was also an opportunity for people to see the new facility in use, with Zumba, dance and cheerleading displays, and music from local group 'Singing for Fun' and the Ann Edwards School Choir.

The building has a cafe with Wi-Fi and a private meeting room.

Peter Jay, vice chair of Fenton’s management committee and a friend of Raymond, said: “Raymond epitomised the South Cerney community spirit,” said

“This building will ensure that Raymond Fenton lives on in the hearts and minds of South Cerney residents.

“If you were lucky enough to know him, we hope that your visit will remind you of fond memories, and if you are a recent arrival may his legacy be that you have a pleasant visit.”

Rhian Gardiner, facilities manager at Fenton’s, said: “We hope that you’ll find the centre to be a place where everyone feels welcome and can come together to dance, sing, relax, play and enjoy each other’s company.”

Gavin Hill, technical director of Redrow South West, said: “It was wonderful to see the local community come together for the opening of what promises to be a hub of village interaction.

“At Redrow we are committed not just to building houses but also thriving communities, and Fenton’s is a great focal point for the people of South Cerney.”
