THE village of Adlestrop is to pay homage to First World War poet Edward Thomas on the centenary of his death.

The special commemorative event, open to all, will take place in Adlestrop Church on Sunday, April 9, and will involve a talk by Anne Harvey, author of Adlestrop Remembered.

Thomas died on the date in 1917 at the Battle of Arras during World War One, but had strong connections to the Cotswold village.

Afterwards there will be light refreshments at the village hall.

A further point of interest for visitors to Adlestrop is its bus shelter, which has a link to Thomas.

The shelter features the old sign from the station above a Great Western Railway bench which inspired the poet to write one of the nation’s favourite poems ‘Adlestrop’.

Historic England is currently considering listing this shelter as part of its response to the centenary of the First World War.
