AN AMBULANCE was called to Cirencester Market Place this morning after an elderly woman banged her face after tripping on a lowered kerb.

A police officer, as well as concerned members of the public and shop workers – one of which performed first aid – were on the scene shortly after the incident just before midday.

The victim, who fell outside House of Fraser, was wrapped in a foil survival blanket and had heavy bruising and cuts around her nose.

The ambulance arrived at 12.05pm with two paramedics then helping her inside for treatment.

She told them she had also grazed her legs, but had been conscious since she fell.

The controversial new ‘invisible’ kerbs are a feature of the town council’s £1.3million regeneration of the Market Place, which was completed last month.

The kerbs have claimed numerous victims since they were installed, firstly in Castle Street last summer, followed by the Market Place itself weeks later.

Several of the casualties have led to hospitalisations.

A woman at the scene today, who did not wish to be named, said “It’s time something was done. Far too many people are already suffering from injuries.”

She went on to say: “I helped a couple of ladies the other day who took falls, it’s getting worse. I suppose she’s got to go to hospital. Well, I hope so.

“The more people they cart off to hospital the better. The more people that sue the better. They [the council] ignore it completely.”

“I have been to the police and I’ve been to the council, they know my feelings.

“It’s fallen on stony ground,” she added.

Another woman at the scene said: “I saw an old lady at the weekend who tripped over and went straight down and hit her forehead.

“I’ve seen about four people trip up in one day. It’s disgraceful. It should never have been allowed.”
