LINCOLN City FC v Burnley, Sutton FC v Arsenal.

This is a good week for David v Goliath contests.

Almost without exception, we want the underdog to win.

We longed to see the Jamaican bobsled team succeed at the 1988 Winter Olympics for no other reason than if someone is the ‘little guy’, we want them to win.

We often feel ourselves the underdog.

We find ourselves struggling against a big company, or the council, the social services, a giant call centre or just society in general and we feel we are the youngster David fighting the giant Goliath in an unfair fight.

However, the heart of the story of the shepherd David fighting with the warrior Goliath (it’s in the Bible in the book of 1Samuel) is not that David is the good guy because he is smaller but because he is humble and committed to God.

Being the little guy doesn’t make us right, it’s being honest, kind and full of integrity that makes us right.

The football team from my home town, which will remain nameless, went through a period of ‘giant killing’ and rose to play in League Two but did so on the back of some violent play and a lot of cash.

They were small but they were not very righteous.

Jesus said “Blessed (or happy) are the pure in heart”.

So whether you are the big guy, or the little guy, what matters is your integrity and kindness, not your size.

Have a great week.
