SCHOOL children had their skills tested in Tetbury in a challenge inspired by a young Malawian boy who built a wind turbine from scrap materials and bicycle parts.

The Schools' Scrap Heap Challenge took place at The Bike Shed in Tetbury with five teams of four pupils.

The challenge was inspired by William Kamkwamba, a self taught engineer who built a wind turbine, and was pioneered last month by engineers from Network Rail.

Pupils were challenged to design and build, within five hours, a work station mounted on a bicycle for use in rural Africa.

The idea was to enable a young student at home to study at their own desk lit by a bicycle light powered by their own pedalling.

The winners of the challenge were the Marling Merlins of Marling School in Stroud.
