TETBURY'S Christmas light switch-on will be taking place tonight.

This year, Mark Cummings of Radio Gloucestershire, along with year five pupil from St Mary's Primary School, Masha Weerasekara, will switch on the town centre lights.

The event will be part of an evening of entertainment and late-night shopping.

The evening will begin with a ‘torch-lit’ procession, leaving Saint Marys’ church for the Market Hall at 5:20pm.

The formal switch-on ceremony will be held at the Market Hall, at 6pm prompt. Avening Silver Band will accompany the carols.

The Wassailers of Stroud will be singing, bringing a traditional festive flavour to the evening and there will be many stalls selling food and gifts.

Santa’s Grotto will be open in the Market Hall from 6.15pm to 7.30pm.

Sue Hirst, chairman of the ‘Christmas in Tetbury’ committee said: “We’ve continued to focus very much on the children again this year but there will be something for everyone.

"It promises to be a really enjoyable evening.”

Church Street (from Old Brewery Lane to Long Street) will be closed to traffic between 4pm and 8pm and a traffic diversion will apply during this time.

A temporary parking restriction order will also be in place on one side of The Green.

The Chipping, Old Brewery Lane and West Street car parks will be free of charge from 4pm and will continue to be free over the entire weekend as part of the Tetbury Christmas Shopping Festival.
