A TOWN council is hoping to save a phone box in Tetbury that is under threat of being removed.

BT have launched a consultation asking residents and town and parish councils to comment on the removal of 60 public payphones in the Cotswolds.

In Tetbury, three payphones, including one on Charlton Road and one on Northfield Road, are proposed to be removed.

After a meeting on Monday, November 28, the town council agreed to object to the removal of the payphone on Charlton Road which has been used 28 times in the past six months, according to the council’s chief executive Natalie Haines.

In Northfield Road, there have been two phone calls made, and in the third phonebox, there has been none.

Cllr Tony Walsh commented: “Northfield Road is near Northfield Close where it is considered that people might need emergency phones. It is not about how many phone calls they have had, it is about the location.”

The council have decided to consult with nearby residents regarding the two phone boxes and to check whether or not the phones are in working order before taking any further action.

BT’s consultation process gives local communities the opportunity to object to the removal of a phone or to adopt a traditional red 'heritage' phone box for £1 (with the phone removed).

If you wish to comment on the proposed removals, email the District Council via leisureandcommunities@cotswold.gov.uk.

The deadline for feedback to the council, which will be passed on to BT, is Friday, December 16 December.

The BT consultation will close on January 7.
