A GLOUCESTERSHIRE children’s charity is set to benefit from a cover of The Rembrandts' hit record ‘I’ll be There for You’, which has been released by a high school band to raise money for Winston's Wish.

The Hagley Catholic High School students were mentored by Dave Robinson, legendary music producer and founder of Stiff Records.

The Rembrants track is a favourite of the students’ band H90, a 90s tribute group formed by the school’s Head of Music Fred Mallinson.

He said: “We want people to hear the single, enjoy it and then buy it so we can raise as much money as we can for Winston’s Wish.”

The opportunity to record the track professionally came about when legendary record producer and founder of Stiff Records Dave Robinson heard the band performing at a Glastonbury warm-up gig.

The students were unaware that Dave – who can list Elvis Costello, Madness and Motorhead among the acts signed to his label – would be there. So it was a complete surprise when he approached them.

“About ten days after the gig, Dave contacted me and said he thought the kids were brilliant and that he would help us record a single,” said Fred. “It is completely mind-blowing that a music legend like him would get in contact with us."

The offer came just days before some band members left school, so they cancelled their end of term celebrations and Fred procured studio time for them. With help from Dave’s friend Pat Collier, they soon had a professionally produced single.

“I’m so proud of them all,” said Fred. “It’s nice to have the recognition from someone so high up in the business. It’s crazy how it has all come about and it’s a dream of mine as well.”

The single is available on iTunes for 79p at: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ill-be-there-for-you-single/id1154549536.

All proceeds will go to Winston’s Wish.
