A DRIVER remains in a life threatening condition after being airlifted to hospital following a collision involving three cars on the A44 in Blockley.

The crash happened on the A44 southbound after the Chipping Campden turning at around 6.15am and involved a silver Peugeot 206, red Citroen C5 and black Volkswagen Golf.

The 33-year-old driver of the Citroen was cut from the vehicle by the fire service and airlifted to University Hospital Coventry with serious head and chest injuries.

He remains in hospital in a life threatening condition.

The 31-year-old driver of the Golf, was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. 

A male passenger in the Peugeot was taken to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford as a precaution.

The driver of the Peugeot and two other passengers, all men, have been taken to Worcester Hospital with non-serious injuries.

The road was closed between the A424 junction and the B4081 junction to Chipping Campden.

There was heavy traffic in both directions affecting Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, and a diversion was in operation via Chipping Campden.

The road is expected to reopen in the next hour once recovery of vehicles and final investigation work is complete. 

Police are still appealing for witnesses. Any witnesses should call 101 and quote incident 42 of October 14 .
