DISABLED golfers in the Cotswolds can enjoy their favourite sport ‘live’ thanks to the gift of an electric buggy to follow or take part in matches at Cirencester Golf Club.

The buggy, a gift from the Prestige vehicle repair group in Cirencester, followed the club’s seniors in a match today (June 21), driven by Mike Smith, who suffered a devastating stroke almost two years ago.

It was the 74-year-old’s first attendance at a game since then with the ‘Mike Smith Buggy’ being named after him.

Mr Smith, a former landlord of the Golden Cross pub on Black Jack Street, said: "That I can follow my dream sport again, and hopefully play again in the future, is due entirely to this wonderful gift from the Prestige group.

"No one should give up when they are faced by something that changes their lives in a bad way. We must always be positive, for the chances are we can be fulfilled in the same ways in the future."

His wife Wendy added: "The buggy has given him a real boost and enabled him to look forward."

Richard Collishaw, manager of Cirencester Golf Club, said: "Cirencester has several members who are desperate to keep playing or at least follow the progress of matches. The buggy is an absolute winner thanks to Prestige and we are delighted."
