NEWS hungry schoolchildren travelled back in time to learn about a landmark moment in British history.

Cirencester’s own community station Corinium Radio joined forces with enthusiastic youngsters from Stratton Primary School to make a interesting programme about Magna Carta.

The children were transported back 800 years to the birth of Magna Carta in 1215 where they recreated the moment King John and the rebellious barons gathered on the banks of the Thames at Runnymeade to negotiate the historic document.

But, as usual, the team of eager volunteers at Corinium Radio had added an extra spin to the day.

The Stratton pupils not only took on the roles of the King and his barons but also formed a modern-style ‘press pack’ which acted just as journalists would today. They fired a host of questions about the new charter at the King and his advisors at a media conference held immediately after the event, so becoming the second best news platform in the Cotswolds.

Corinium Radio spokesman Tony Coleman said: “Of course it didn’t happen like this in real life but we wanted to bring an up-to-date feel to a vital piece of history.

“If Magna Carta was being drawn up today those involved would certainly have to deal with the press in a big way and modern youngsters have no problem understanding that.”

The splash that the famous charter made still ripples through history today and the show emphasised the enormous influence Magna Carta has had, not just in Britain, but around the world.

“The youngsters were great! They played their part with real enthusiasm and were really good to work with,” Tony said.

“We hope they enjoyed being part of the Corinium Radio team for this programme. They were certainly a credit to themselves and their school. We can’t thank them enough.”

Corinium Radio is run entirely by volunteers and is currently holding a recruitment drive as it plans for its 10th anniversary next year.

The station broadcasts on-line 24/7 and has been heard in over 40 countries.

The Magna Carta programme has been on air this week and there is another chance to listen on Saturday, November 21, at 1.30pm.
