EIGHTY golfers wearing the red and white of St George gathered in South Cerney to raise money for a charity that gives terminally ill children amazing days out.

South Cerney Golf Clubs’ St George’s Eve Scramble teed off at 8am on Wednesday, April 22.

The golfers split into groups of three for a ‘Texas Scramble’ style competition, with each group starting at a different hole.

The day raised a club record of £933 for Make a Wish Foundation, the charity that makes children’s dreams come with unforgettable days out.

Christine Saunders, lady captain of South Cerney Golf Club, organised the event.

The charity’s aims have special significance for Christine as her brother died at a young age.

“He always had lung problems and found it hard to breath,” she said.

“He died when I was 12 and he was eight, it was just before Christmas which made it worse.

“I just wanted to do something about him then, I kept going into his room and seeing him fight for breath and I just wished I could do something.”

Money was raised through a raffle, with prizes from celebrities such as golfer David Howell who won the Dunhill Gold Competition in 2013.

The winning team was Dave Mitchell, Chris Hackle and Julie Allen who finished the 72 par course in 61 shots.

Christine is hoping to raise £2,000 during her year-long captaincy.
