AN environmental graduate trainee at the Royal Agricultural University has won the Outstanding Intern silver award at the Grow Gloucestershire Showcase Awards last week.

On October 20, Pearl Costello joined the University as the Environmental Graduate Trainee to assist in raising awareness, improving environmental performance and implementing an accredited EMS.

Pearl Costello said: “I am thrilled to have won the silver prize for Outstanding Intern – it feels so exciting! We had a great night at the awards ceremony and coming runner up made it even better, so thank you again to everybody who put me forward and came along on the night.”

The award recognises that Pearl lead the whole process, effecting a substantial cultural change throughout the University and earning accreditation at phase three of the British Standard for EMS. This significant personal achievement also delivered benefits for the University through cost savings and improved reputation, marketing opportunities and legislative compliance – levels of awareness are much higher and action plans are in place.

Jan Martin, Environmental and Estates Returns Officer at the University, said: “Pearl has made a real difference throughout the University, leading to significant improvements in our environmental management and awareness of sustainability issues. She has tackled a range of topics and her efforts and achievements have been recognised by many people in different departments, at all levels right up to the University Executive and Governing Council. During the year she has been with us she really has been an Outstanding Intern.”

Pearl has brought a deep understanding of environmental issues, a positive attitude and immense enthusiasm and commitment to the RAU, as well as the tact and the ability to motivate people at all levels. Her encouragement, tenacity and high standards have helped the University to significantly improve its environmental management.

The Grow Gloucestershire Showcase Awards recognise talented young people and the contributions they have made to businesses.
