PASSENGERS were delayed last night and this morning throughout Wiltshire and Gloucestershire as heavy flooding and lightning saw trains evacuated.

Shortly after 1am, Network Rail informed Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service that a train had become stuck in floodwater at Pound Pill in Corsham.

Around 90 passengers were on the train, which came to a halt in a cutting where water was up to a metre deep in places.

The train was passing under a bridge when it ran into floodwater and it is believed part of the train will be stuck at the scene for several days because some of the ballast holding the track in place has been washed away.

A multi agency response was put in place to resolve the incident and all passengers were removed from the train by 6am and were taken home by taxi.

The break-down led to further delays for services running between Bristol and Swindon, and shuttle buses were set up.

The fire service also received around 200 calls for help since 9pm last night due to the bad weather.

Drivers are urged to take care on the roads this morning as roads may be flooded and some traffics light might not be working.
