Young ballet stars from South Cerney near Cirencester and Malmesbury to appear in Swan Lake with the English Youth Ballet in Oxford
THREE Gloucestershire ballet stars beat nearly 100 young hopefuls for the chance to appear in a production of Swan Lake this September.
Abby and Bethany Chinnock from South Cerney and Caitlin Finlay from Malmesbury were selected at an audition in May from over 250 young ballet dancers and are due to appear in adaptation of Swan Lake at the New Theatre in Oxford.
Abby, 14, said she feels so excited to appear on such a big stage: "I'm really excited to do the show as it's my first one. I can't wait to learn the new dances."
Caitlin, 12, has appeared in a show by the English Youth Ballet before but is still looking forward to performing again: "I was in the Nutcracker but I'm delighted to have a second opportunity to perform with EYB."
10-year-old Bethany, Abby's sister, has been ballet dancing since she was four: "I was so surprised when I heard I'd been chosen," she said. "I love ballet, I'm so excited."
Mums to the girls, Michelle Chinnock and Nicola Finlay both said they were delighted to hear that their daughters had been chosen out of so many other young ballet dancers.
"100 children auditioned in Caitlin's age category," said Nicola. "Only 50 were chosen in the end. Although Caitlin has done the Nutcracker, Swan Lake is the performance she really wanted to appear in."
"It's the first time for both my girls," Michelle said. "It's going to be so good for their confidence and also a lovely experience dancing with professionals."
The three girls start their 10-day intensive rehearsal process at The Oxford Academy on Wednesday, August 28 with Abby and Caitlin performing as swans and Bethany performing as a courtier, a type of servant.
British principal ballerina Julianne Rice Oxley said: “There is such a wonderful team spirit in the young company.”
The young dancers we are working with in Oxford have great energy and attack. They are so lucky. I wish there had been something like EYB when I was training."
The girls, who all attend Minety Dance Theatre School, will appear in Swan Lake with EYB at the New Theatre in Oxford for three performances from 20-21 September.
