GRIEF-STRICKEN family and friends have been left reeling following the death of a "wonderful, warm and caring" grandmother who was killed as she crossed a Cirencester dual carriageway.

Mum-of-three Susan MacKenzie, from Cirencester, was attempting to cross the A429 between the Waitrose and Stroud Road roundabouts at around 5.50pm on Wednesday, January 2 when she was struck by a black Audi A4.

The 59-year-old was taken to Swindon’s Great Western Hospital with major head and chest injuries, where she later died.

The driver of the Audi, a 42-year-old woman from Wiltshire, along with two primary school-aged children who were in the car, were not injured in the crash.

Shocked friends are now planning a vigil and balloon release in memory of Sue, who has been described as "one of earth’s angels".

The devoted grandmother, mum and sister grew up in Hatherop and later lived in Quenington, before moving to Cirencester where she worked at Peony in West Way and Happy Hen House Chickadee in the Wool Market.

Her close-knit family were unable to speak about their loss this week but friends have offered their treasured memories of Sue, who was said to have touched many lives in the town with her passion for spiritual healing and singing in local choirs.

"Sue was a beautiful person," one friend said. "She always had the biggest smile on her face whenever I saw her and was always laughing. Her giggle was infectious and her kind heart enormous.

"There are no words to make sense of a tragedy like this."

Friend John Moaby, from Quenington, added: "She was the most caring girl you could ever wish to meet. She was one of earth’s angels."

Sue will be sadly missed by her sister Christine Morley, brother Ian Patheyjohns, two daughters Nicola Bint and Sophie MacKenzie, son Stuart MacKenzie and her two-year-old granddaughter.

Gloucestershire police have appealed for information on the crash and can be contacted on 101, quoting incident number 313 of January 2.

A poem written in tribute to Sue by her family

It was a sudden parting, too bitter to forget,
It’s only those who loved you dear, are the ones who won’t forget,
We never saw you close your eyes, we never saw you die,
We only heard that you had gone, without a last goodbye

God Bless.
