Vandals damage village hall roof Vandals damage village hall roof

VANDALS have caused damage to the roof of a Cotswold village hall, forcing a cafe to close.

Vandalism to the roof of Kempsford village hall, along with the heavy rain of the past week, caused the kitchen ceiling to collapse.

Village Hall committee member Peter Wolfenden said the outside portion of the damage had already been repaired, but the damage to the kitchen meant the village hall cafe would be closed until November.

“It’s been a problem for a while but we’re trying to address it now,” he said.

“We had some problem with vandalism over the summer, but it seemed to have stopped after the police caught them and made them write an apologetic letter.

“They must have forgotten though as it’s started again. “ He added the cost of repairs would be covered by the hall’s insurance.

I cant believe the police, to let these vandals off by making them write a letter. What good will that do except make them think that if they vandalise something they will be let off by writing a letter. I know of a child a few years ago who accidentally cracked a window at Kempsford village hall and he was arrested and bound over at age 10. Wheres the fairness and justice in that. Shame on you Gloucestershire Police!

Why criticise the Police, they tracked down the culprits and extracted an admission of guilt and now it is up to the insurance company whether they pursue the vandals for the cost of the repairs.

I disagree, but agree with David Broad.

Is there a case for criminal damage? If so, then they should be charged. But then they would get off with a caution, community service, or similar.

So, why bother?

Sad isn't it that we reach that stage as a society. Easier to do nowt than to do right.
