Abandoned fire control room is up for rent to combat £1.5m leak

AN ABANDONED regional fire control centre which costs taxpayers more than £1.5m a year has been put up for rent.

As part of a Labour initiative to streamline 46 control centres across the country, nine regional bases were built in 2007.

A South West fire control centre in Taunton was built in 2007, but computer issues meant it was never officially opened and the plan was later scrapped by the coalition government in 2010.

Now tenants are being sought for the 30,000 sq ft building at an estimated annual cost of £450,000 by independent property company GVA, on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government.
