PLANS for a new community-run library in Lechlade are shaping up.

Earlier this year, Gloucestershire County Council cut funding for the town’s library as part of a shake-up to save £1.8million from the budget.

Now a core of volunteers have come forward to make decisions on future services at the facility, from when the council hands it over on November 1.

From then library users are set to get one extra hour per week, new books will be bought and the number of computers at the facility will increase.

Lechlade town councillor Sue Coakley, chairman of the new Lechlade Community Library charity, said: "It is all very exciting, although there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes with the management committee doing a great job of getting everything ready for November."

GCC continues to be responsible for the building’s structure and before the launch date will give the frontage a new lick of paint and carry out repair works.

New opening hours will be Monday, 10am to 4pm, Wednesday, 10am to 1pm, Friday 1pm to 7pm and Saturday, 10am to 1pm.
