ONE of the Cotswold’s most popular outdoor attractions has ended the summer with an epic 24-hour swimathon.

Cirencester Open Air Pool held a 24-hour relay swimathon from midday on Friday August 31 to midday on Saturday September 1.

Volunteer Chris Maggs said the swimmers had a travelled a total of 53 miles – the equivalent of swimming to Malborough and back – and raised a total of £800.

“It was very successful and everyone was very generous,” he said. The fundraising event saw hardy swimmers take to the water in 20 minute slots, ensuring there was someone in the pool at all times during the 24 hour period.

The outdoor pool on Cecily Hill, which ends its 2012 summer season this Sunday, was set up in 1869 by a group of businessmen, and is entirely volunteer-run.
