North Cotswolds flood defences on track

A NEW flood defence scheme for the North Cotswolds has taken a step closer to completion after Moreton-in-Marsh Town Council agreed to support it.

At Monday’s meeting, the town council discussed plans by Cotswold District Council to develop a flood defence scheme on land adjacent to Stow Road.

It is hoped the proposed new defences will avoid a repeat of the flooding which hit the town in 2007.

CDC has estimated the scheme will cost up to £400,000, and have asked the town council for a contribution towards it. Cllr Rod Hooper said he fully supported the plans.

Gloucestershire County Council and CDC are providing so much and, if the town council are supporting it as well, it gives them a lot more clout with DEFRA to get grants,” he said.

“Personally I think we owe it to the townspeople to pay something towards this.”

The town council agreed to pay £7,500 towards the scheme as a one-off payment.
