A CIRENCESTER pair are believed to be fighting for their life in hospital after driving off a bridge and crashing onto the A429 dual carriageway.

A man, aged 26, and a woman suffered critical injuries when their car landed on its roof on the Swindon Road after veering off a bridge near the Golden Farm Inn yesterday evening.

Sirens were heard across Cirencester when emergency services rushed to the scene at around 6.15pm.

On arrival the male driver was not conscious or breathing. He was freed from the upturned crushed vehicle by Cirencester fire crews and taken by Wiltshire Air Ambulance to John Radcliffe Hospital.

Firefighters then worked to cut free the trapped female passenger, who is believed to be a similar age to the driver. She suffered severe pelvic injuries and was taken by Great Western Ambulance to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

They are both believed to be in a critical condition.

The crash narrowly missed rush hour and no other vehicles are reported to have been damaged or involved in the incident, which prompted a surge of activity on Twitter.

A police investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
