Traffic-busting cameras set up around county

A NEW congestion-busting scheme has seen a series of traffic monitoring cameras set up around Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire County Council have set up nineteen cameras at busy spots around the county including the crossroads of London Road, Victoria Road, Watermoor Road and Dyer Street in Cirencester, and the junction of the A429 and the A436 at Sheep Street, Stow-on-the-Wold.

A camera has also been placed at the junction of Thames Street and High Street, Lechlade, with various others elsewhere in the county.

The cameras send a live feed to Shire Hall so the county’s traffic team can monitor traffic and collect information to try and develop ways to keep traffic jams down.

GCC network and traffic manager Lawrence Elcocks said the £45,000 initiative would help the council’s traffic team react more quickly to signal break downs or malfunctions and help to reduce delays.

“It also saves council tax payers money, as our traffic light technicians can simply take a look via live stream cameras at any reported problems rather than having to travel out on site to investigate reports of faults,” he added.

“For places like Cirencester and Stow this means we can deal with faults far more quickly – our technicians can see what the fault is straight away and then deal with any problems.

“The cameras will not be recording speeds or be used for enforcement or fines.”
