FORMER Stratton health retreat Le Spa has been put on the market following a long-fought battle by the owner to convert the site into a housing development.

Attempts by Linda Lloyd to convert the Gloucester Road venue had failed since a first application for a 60-bed care home and 23 houses last July. The care home element of the scheme was accepted, but the housing scheme rejected.

Other planning applications for housing on the site also failed until March when a scheme for seven executive homes was finally passed.

However, Stratton Place is now up for grabs with Birmingham agency Edward Symmons marketing the site.

Residents have reported the terraces, gardens and parking area have been razed and a pile of rubble fenced off.

Colin Forbes, who set up the Stratton Residents' Association, in response to the planning application said he predicted that once permission to build housing had been granted Ms Lloyd would sell the land to a developer.

"I've said this all along and now we have the uncertainty of what may be built on our doorsteps," he said. "It's disgusting this has been allowed to happen."
