WITH the threat of fuel shortages looming, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is warning the public not to stockpile petrol.

Chief Fire Officer Jon Hall said the highly flammable fuel was extremely dangerous and presented a major hazard to firefighters.

“I am really concerned about the prospect of householders stockpiling petrol at home in anticipation of a possible tanker driver’s strike,” he added. “There are strict legal requirements for the storage of this type of fuel and a householder may commit an offence by not storing petrol safely.”

The legal limit on storing petrol at home is two five-litre plastic containers or two ten-litre metal jerry cans, which have been specifically designed for storing fuel.

Filling stations will only dispense fuel into vehicles or approved containers.
