BREAKING: Cirencester Christmas tree taken down for health and safety fears

Cirencester Christmas tree taken down for health and safety fears Cirencester Christmas tree taken down for health and safety fears

CHRISTMAS celebrations in Cirencester hit a snag this morning as council workers started dismantling the town's Christmas tree.

Townsfolk watched on in shock as half a dozen Cirencester Town Council workers began stripping the tree branch by branch by chainsaw from the bottom up.

Council land manager Jamie Walton told the Standard that a large 25ft split had been noticed in the trunk of the Christmas tree this morning and scaffolding had been erected immediately to dismantle the tree for health and safety reasons.

"We've had to cut it down in sections because obviously we couldn't just chop it down in the middle of Market Place on a busy Friday, especially when its market day."

Jamie confirmed that a new tree should be in place next Tuesday in time for the Christmas lights switch on next Friday.

For more on this story see next week's Standard.

Top marks to the Town Council for spotting a potential public hazard and dealing with it promptly.
If only CDC had taken its responsibilities for health and safety that seriously...........

If ... "rolly c" ... really is a councillor, why be coy and use a pseudonym?
His English grammar perhaps............

Any truth to the rumour that the 25ft split was at least smaller than the one in the local Tory ranks as they seek urgent Officer advice on whether 'it is expedient' to give Lynden the chop? Apparently, an external report by Sir Bufton Tufton has already been commissioned.

Mr Jeans takes time off from sniping at Conservatives to attack a fellow Lib Dem. Interesting. I said he shoud get out more. But who is Rolly C, he claims to be a town councillor, but is he actually the town Councillor named Roly because if not he is dangerously close to impersonating him and surely that is an offence?

As for splits in Tory ranks Olly should look beneath the thin layer of bailer twine and old newspapers soaked in creosote that "Binds" the Local Lib ems together.
Splits its like a bundle of kindling thrown together.

I think you all need to get a grip.

If Union Man is, as everyone suspects, a well known Tory Councillor, he would be well advised to keep his right-wing views on Islam to himself.
He may be comforted by the fact that the ethics quango, Standards for England, is being abolished and he is therefore unlikely to be referred to that body for his pathetic comment above.
However, councillors still have a duty to treat all religious groups with respect and he should know better.

Perhaps 'Union Man' will be joining the picket line in Trinity Road next Wednesday to stand shoulder to shoulder with his trusty Cotswold District Council Officers as they strike for a pension. Should make for a good photo opportunity!

No problem then with finding firewood for the brazier Crispin, and very seasonal too!

Can you suggest any particular carols the strikers might like to sing?

Union Man says...
11:56am Fri 25 Nov 11

Sorry. As I'm not a member of UNISON the Thatcherite era strike laws would define my presence on the picket line as secondary picketing and therefore I would be liable for arrest.
For real impact they should have striked next Wednesday when it is CDC Planning Committee, that would have set the cat among the chickens.

I must agree Union Man, it is nice to see Robert Jeanes venturing in to new pastures and targeting a Lib Dem for a change!
