A FORMER footballer from Lechlade will be paddling full steam ahead today when he sets off down the Thames for charity.
Paul Hunt is part of an 18-strong team embarking on an epic journey to row from Lechlade to Windsor in canoes.
The event aims to raise money for Prospect Hospice in Swindon which cared for the father of Paul’s friend Steve Slattery who died from bone cancer in March.
Paul, a former Swindon Town, Forest Green Rovers, Cirencester Town player and Cirencester’s former assistance manager said: “Steve is a good friend of mine, I’ve known him for years.
“It’s a great cause which affects many people, and to be able to do in memory of Steve’s dad is brilliant.
“My partner and I have raised £1,000, we’re trying to raise £20,000 in total.
“I’ve never done anything like this before. It’s hard work but very good fun, I have discovered muscles I never knew I had,” he added.
Footballers David Beckham and Alan Smith are among those who have pledged their support to the rowers who aim to complete the challenge in four days.
Paul takes over the Wheatsheaf pub in Swindon in three weeks time but has not ruled out getting back into a canoe for another dip in the water just yet.
