YOU’VE DONE IT! The target to raise enough cash for a £4,000 plasma touch-screen computer for David Pearson with cerebral palsy has been reached.

David, aged 14, from Stratton in Cirencester, will now be able to have his very own computer - similar to the one he uses at his special needs school - thanks to the generosity Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard readers.

Two companies involved in making the device were so moved by David's story, they made a special £500 discount.

David, who is one of triplets, attends the Milestone school in Gloucester, where learning and playing on an interactive touch-screen makes his day.

The family will now be able to buy one for David to use at home, or when he goes away.

The appeal was launched last month after David’s mother Lizzi Ussher, wrote to The Standard asking for help.

She had already raised £700 from The Soroptomists and the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. David’s sister Katy and brother Robert raised a further £500 from a charity concert with their rock band The Portraits.

This week Lizzi said: "This has renewed my faith in human nature. I shall be writing to you to thank everybody".

The donations came rolling in from the start. A businessman who runs an engineering business with his wife in East Anglia read of our appeal. They sent a £1,000 cheque to The Standard, but wanted to remain anonymous.

Cirencester Scope gave £500. Anne Stuart, their former chair, said the group was dedicated to help people in this area with disabilities, especially cerebral palsy.

Another anonymous donor gave £250 from an uncle's will. An individual donor came into The Standard offices and put £50 into a collecting box.

Standard editor Skip Walker paid tribute to the generosity of readers.

She added: "Its fantastic that once again our readers have come up trumps and shown such generosity and compassion".

The two firms making the discount are Inclusive Technology, from Oldham, Lancs, which provides the software, and Integrex, from Derbyshire, which makes the stands.

Sukhjit Gill, Managing Director of Inclusive Technology said, "Inclusive and Integrex are delighted to contribute towards David's Inclusive Interactive Plasma Screen. These screens are designed to make computers accessible for learners with physical difficulties and we hope it supports David's education."
