TABLE-topping Purton won a difficult home fixture against fourth-placed Witney United 1-0 with a first-half goal to maintain an unbeaten league run.

The hosts went into Saturday's encounter without leading striker Eurshell Fearon and the influential Kenny Hughes.

Although the visitors enjoyed much possession, Luke Alford in the Purton goal had little to do.

He was, though, beaten on 32 minutes when failing to hold a Keyes shot and Witney netted from the rebound, but this effort was ruled offside.

In the first half, Avenell and Hawkins both had shots cleared off the Witney goal-line and good work by Wyatt set up Avenell but his effort was deflected wide by a defender.

Five minutes before the interval, Purton went ahead when O'Sullivan broke down the right and swept the ball into the box for Mitchell Wyatt to net from close range.

In the second half, Purton had chances to increase their lead, but the visitors still battled away. Avenell hit the woodwork after 55 minutes and Mitchell Wyatt headed over the rebound.

Kenny Hawkins and Avenell were again unlucky to see efforts charged down and Ritchie Saunders after heading a through ball past his marker just failed to get the ball under control before shooting for goal and the chance was gone.

With league fixtures away to Harrow Hill and Ardley United and home games versus Quarry Nomads and Old Woodstock Town, it will be a marvellous achievement if Purton can maintain their unbeaten league run to the end of the season.
