FOR the first time in Cirencester's 22-year history of twinning with Itzehoe in Northern Germany, Cirencester Choral Society recently joined forces with its opposite number, the Konzertc Itzehoe, in a combined concert accompanied by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in the Theater Itzehoe.

Twenty-five members of the Choral Society, plus a few loyal supporters, were warmly received by host families who had volunteered to look after their visitors in their own homes in the true spirit of twinning.

The fact that the conductor issued all his instructions in German at the joint rehearsal did not phase the English singers who had performed the same works at their concert in the Parish Church, and the joint performance, which included Zadok the Priest and Vivaldi's Gloria, to a capacity audience was a great success.

It was also enthusiastically reviewed by a local paper.

As well as an official reception at the Old Rathaus (Town Hall) by the Burgermeister of Itzehoe, the Choral Society was treated to a guided tour of the area as well as a barbecue where lasting bonds were forged and songs sung late into the night.

"This visit proved a huge success, strengthening the links between our towns and a 'return match' is planned for 2006 in Cirencester," said Choral Society chairman Richard Kent. Choral Society members would like to encourage other societies and clubs to arrange joint ventures.
