IN another top-of-the-table clash, Highworth's long, undefeated run was ended by a North Leigh side which completed a Hellenic Premier double over their Wiltshire hosts on Tuesday evening of last week.

In truth, the 0-1 loss was probably a fair reflection of the game with Highworth not making much of a showing.

Having played on the previous Saturday, Highworth then provided some 50 percent of the Greyhound team which, only the following day, qualified for the last 16 of the National Sunday Cup competition.

Feeder leagues such as this, where two games per week have become the norm, plus those who play in Sunday leagues, highlights the problems of recovery from such a demanding programme.

The requirement for managers and coaches of such teams to become aware of the need for their players to be involved with recovery therapy has become paramount.

Having recovered from the demands of three games in four days, the Town regained a great deal of their form on Saturday, causing their Slimbridge hosts considerable problems in a 1-1 draw.

Following a goal-less first half, the match still remained finely balanced. After some 15 minutes of the second half, Paul Cooper put Highworth ahead and, with the visitors controlling the game, Mark Belcher came close with his shot striking the crossbar.

However, as in the recent Bishop's Cleeve game, a win for the Town was not to be as their hosts equalised some three minutes from the end. When a shot evaded the diving Elliott Jackson, it was a great pity as he had enjoyed had a fine outing.

Going into Christmas, the league table shows Highworth still holding on to the top spot.

It is a great position for them and also raises the hopes of their manager, John Fisher, who is aiming to win the Premier Division title.

Everyone connected with Highworth Town FC will doubtless want to extend good wishes and season's greeting to club stalwart Rodney Haines.

Due to a protracted illness, Rodney, who was awarded the Football Association's long-service award in 2003 for completing 50 years' service with Highworth Town, will unfortunately be spending his Christmas in Great Western Hospital.

On Monday, December 27, Highworth face a local derby trip to Fairford Town.

And on Monday, January 3, Highworth are set to entertain Pewsey Vale, 1pm ko.
