Matt Wilson's mother hails coma recovery 'miracle'

A YOUNG Cirencester man who spent over a week in a coma after undergoing life-saving brain surgery has astounded doctors with the speed of his recovery prompting his mother to label him a ‘walking miracle’.

Matt Wilson, 20, fell into coma following an assault in Vaisey Road, Stratton, in the early hours of Tuesday, February 16.

The former Deer Park School pupil says he has no memory of the incident, which left him close to death. Surgeons at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol removed a blood clot from his brain. Matt regained consciousness nine days later.

Parents Andrew and June visited him every day in hospital and were ecstatic when they arrived on the tenth day to find out he was awake.

"We walked into the hospital and I couldn’t quite believe it – he just looked up and said ‘alright mum’.

"He made an amazing recovery. I was in shock for nearly a week, it was like being on autopilot basically."

June posted regular updates on Matt’s condition on Facebook and his friends also left hundreds of messages of support for him and his family.

"I was really moved when I eventually read them all," Matt added. "It meant a lot to me seeing how much people cared."

June said: "The support from all his friends was amazing, it helped us a lot."

Matt has spent the last week recovering at home. His family is supervising him for the time being but doctors have said they expect Matt to make a full recovery.

"The doctors were very pleased with him," June added. "He has still got to do a few memory tests but he is doing great. He's a walking miracle."
