Lechlade pub toasting its own success

THE Crown Inn is toasting its success after landing the title of Campaign for Real Ale’s South Cotswolds Pub of the Year.

The 17-th century Lechlade pub was chosen because of its commitment to selling quality real ale.

Cirencester CAMRA chairman Andrew Frape said: "The Crown won because of the general enthusiasm of owner and management team, and the attitude shown towards the brewery by the locals. "Plus their well managed and highly popular summer and winter beer festivals certainly didn't hinder their cause."

Out of approximately 55,000 British pubs, only 4,500 of the finest outlets for cask beer can be included in the "Good Beer Guide"-including The Crown.

Owner Alan Watkins said he was thrilled to receive the award in recognition of what the pub and brewery team have achieved.

The Halfpenny Brewery, which brews at the back of the watering hole, was commissioned only 15 months ago.

Mr Watkins added: "It couldn’t have happened without everybody’s help, support and a team dedicated to real ale excellence."

"In fact, we have just produced our one hundredth brew this week, and we’ve called it, very originally, ‘100th Brew’ to mark this milestone occasion."

The Crown has now been entered into the judging process to find The 2010 Gloucestershire CAMRA Pub of the Year.
