A COTSWOLDS adventurer has set off on perhaps his biggest challenge yet to tackle an unforgiving peak known as the Savage Mountain.

Tetbury’s Jake Meyer, 25, has embarked on his challenge to climb the 28,251ft K2 in the Himalayan range on the border between northern Pakistan and Xinjiang, China.

Although Jake is no stranger to climbing the world’s tallest mountains – having been the youngest at the time to conquer the seven highest mountains in the seven continents aged 21 - K2 presents a different challenge entirely, with one in every four climbers dying while attempting the climb.

While around 4,000 people having climbed Everest, just 302 have scaled K2.

For the past three years Jake has tried to arrange a K2 attempt but with two not materialising it was a case of third time luck.

"This all happened just six weeks before the climb," he said. "An international team doing it contacted me and I thought: ‘Let’s grab the bull by the horns’. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time.

"I feel mentally prepared for it. I have always been quite lucky with my mountain climbs, so long may it continue. Fingers crossed the weather is going to be be okay."

Jake will be raising funds from the trip for the Make A Wish Foundation, a charity he has supported for a long time that grants wishes of children aged between three and 17 who have life-threatening illnesses.

He arrived in Pakistan this week and is waiting to start his climb, which he estimates will take two months.

Jake will be writing a regular blog of his trek on his website www.jakemeyer.co.uk, which will also be available on the Standard's website.
