A SLICE of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding cake went under the hammer in the Cotswolds yesterday as the Standard went to press.

The nine-inch square piece of cake icing and marzipan, which weighs 28 ounces (800 grams) was expected to attract bids of up to £2,000 at Dominic Winter Book Auctions in South Cerney.

It was given to Moyra Smith, a servant at Clarence House, by a royal chef after the royal wedding in 1981.

The piece of cake comes with a signed thank you letter from Charles and Diana to Mrs Smith for a clock, and a bottle of beer produced to mark Prince William's birth in 1982.

Auctioneer Chris Albury said: "The decorative sugar icing of the royal coat of arms on top of the cake is very skilled and while there is some cracking and damage it is in remarkably good condition.

"We understand that twenty-three wedding cakes were officially made and this is most likely one from a single-tier cake sent for the staff at Clarence House.

"Whoever buys it will no doubt keep it for posterity - as an investment you can't both have your cake and eat it."
