Around 2,900 comments submitted to the planning application for Oxford United's proposed stadium have been temporarily removed.

The club submitted plans for the 16,000-capacity stadium at The Triangle land in Kidlington to Cherwell District Council earlier this year in February.

Following concerns raised by members of the public the authority will remove respondents' names and addresses because of the application's "sensitive nature".

The comments will reappear on the website and be taken into consideration once the information is redacted.

A spokesperson for Cherwell District Council said: “Due to the sensitive nature of this application the council is taking additional steps to protect the privacy of people submitting representations on it.

“Therefore we are temporarily removing the public comments that have been submitted on this application from the website in order to redact respondents' names and addresses.

"This will take some time to carry out due to the high number of comments received.

“Any comments received so far will be taken into account and will reappear on the website for this application once redacted.

“Any new comments submitted will also appear on the website in a redacted format.”

It comes after a United fan received "an abusive letter" through the post following on April his support of the club’s new stadium proposals.

U's supporter Charlie Smith backed the stadium plans through Cherwell District Council’s planning portal.

The consultation process means the publication of a person's addresses is a legal requirement, however, this has now been altered.

Part of the alleged letter reads: “Your comments on the planning application show that you are a total d******d with no concept of how to keep your large nose out of someone else’s local community affairs.

“Local councillors have a duty to their local social communities, not to commercial enterprises.

“Your c****y football team is owned by a bunch of corrupt foreigners whose governments are busy burning down their own countries."

Friends of Stratfield Brake (FoSB), who represent opposition to the proposed site, have said the decision to protect people’s personal details is a “more appropriate policy”.

Today the club have confirmed all the contracts relating to the land for Oxford United’s proposed new stadium have been signed.

The U’s have announced that a legally binding lease option with Oxfordshire County Council, for land at The Triangle, south of Kidlington Roundabout, has been signed, in addition to a community collaboration agreement.

The latest step follows the news last month that heads of terms had been agreed following months of negotiations between the club and the council.

The club said it must leave the Kassam Stadium by summer 2026 by the latest.
