DOZENS of carp have been added to a lake behind a Cotswold pub in order to destroy the green weed that has spread over it.

Robert Jenkins, owner of The Inn at Fossebridge, put 40 fish in the lake as the latest in a series of green' solutions to overcome problems as they arise at the 300-year-old inn.

The carp will eat the weed and clear the lake in a matter of weeks.

Mr Jenkins said: "It is a beautiful lake, but the surface is covered in weed; to dig out and start again would be £20,000 and anyway there would be no guarantee of success.

"The staple diet of the carp we have purchased is weeds. They are a specific type and after advice we purchased 40 and we believing they are eating away to the stomach's delight and we should have a much better view of what's in there when their job is done."

I really like this story. It's great to hear about this guy who has turned to a perfectly natural solution to this problem. Well done to him!

Be careful with carp. It's a well known fact (Dispatches, BBC2, 31-02-97)that these creatures can, if provoked, spit molten cynicism into your eyes. A lot of them also have nits.

I can remember when the "lake" was dug out, It was known as Halliday's Pond back then. I guess the customers will be invited to catch the little blighters when the weed has all gone

Jesus, take a thread and it doesn't take long for you lot to fillet with bad puns.

I'd like to see you all battered for such carp jokes

Some dace you people really cheer me up and although I find it hard to tackle some of the humour (as it's a bit coarse) I am hooked. In fact i have a bream-ing smile just reading this now and wonder how I'll ever scale the heights of the comedy genius within as some of the jokes are brill-iant and I don't want to flounder about trying to match them. So I'm going to leave this plaice for now and mullet over as i don't want to make a sprat of myself and loi-tur bot I will be back tomorrow
