Councillor attacks Government smoking policy

A DISTRICT councillor launched an attack on Government policy over the national smoking ban during yesterday's Cotswold District Council planning meeting.

Cllr John Birch, who represents Thames Head, ranted that the Government's policy had caused massive problems for small village pubs and clubs who have suffered headaches coming to terms with the legislation and driving away business.

The comments were made during discussion to determine whether or not to remove a smoking shelter built outside The Avening Social Club.

He said: "Every single pub or club in the district now has to get one of these. I think a letter needs to go to the minister saying you didn't think it through'.

"The village needs that club. It was perfectly alright until the Government this stupid legislation through that we can't understand."

Residents of Avening had complained that the shelter, next to a stream, had become a hang out spot for youngsters creating noise and anti-social behaviour.

Planning officers had recommended it be removed as it harms the character and appearance of the conservation area.

The decision was deferred until next month's planning meeting for further information from the Environment Agency.
