Former army instructor's £100,000 challenge

A FORMER army training instructor hopes to raise £100,000 for Tetbury-based charity Hope for Tomorrow through a gruelling two-day challenge to climb some of the UK's highest mountains.

Not only will David 'Mac' McKinnon climb Scafell Pike in England, Mount Snowdon in Wales and Ben Nevis in Scotland, he plans to cycle the 450 miles in between, in just over two days.

Mac, 35, hopes to raise £100,000 for Gloucestershire cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow.

The charity provides support for cancer patients and their families, and also operates the world's first mobile chemotherapy units - which can treat up to 20 patients a day.

The Cirencester fitness guru commented: "It stuck with me for months, I thought what happens if I become ill? As I'm self-employed I would have no income while unable to work. Someone would have to take me all the way to Cheltenham to receive treatment.

"I am waking up to the enormity of the challenge. At the moment I am so involved in trying to raise the target and training there is little time to get excited but I know I am going to help make a difference for a really worthwhile cause."

Mac begins his mission on July 11.
