Lantern Entertainment (the successor to The Weinstein Company) signed a worldwide distribution deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in October 2018.

It was announced in March 2020 that George Clooney would direct and produce alongside Grant Heslov, with Mark L. Smith writing the script.

One of the team's main rowers was a British boatbuilder in the story and Clooney was angling for the picture to be shot on the water near his mansion in Berkshire back in December 2021.

He told Baz Bamigboye's Daily Mail newspaper column: "There's an argument that some of the sporting scenes could be filmed over here but there's a lot to discuss before we reach that point."
