Cotswold politicians have criticised Prime Minister Boris Johnson over his handling of Partygate, following the release of Sue Gray's long-awaited report.

While the report claimed there had been 'failures of leadership and judgment', there was little factual detail included as at least 12 events are currently under investigation by the police.

While a fresh assessment will be published after the police investigation concludes, no guarantee has been made that the full report will ever be released.

The stance has frustrated MP for The Cotswolds, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown.

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire this morning he said: "The Prime Minister has got us into this situation I think he owes it to the people of this country to give a full explanation of what actually did or did not go on.

"I think the only way he really restores trust is to not dodge the bullet when the Metropolitan Police have carried out their investigations and publish the thing in full and let members of parliament but particularly the public make up their own mind on what actually went on."

Sir Geoffrey said that although the Prime Minister 'had not handled it at all well' there was not currently an appetite among Conservative MPs to push for a vote of no confidence.

"Personally I would hope the Prime Minister is able to clear his name," he said.

"If he's not able to clear his name eventually I suppose he will have to resign but we're not anywhere near that at the moment. He's bought himself time.

When asked if 'shameless' was a fair description of Boris Johnson he replied: "He is completely Teflon coated. I think we knew what we were getting when we elected him.

"I think you could call him shameless. I think that's not a bad word but that is the character of the Prime Minister."

Sir Geoffrey also claimed that the issue 'isn't being raised that much' by people he had spoken to on the doorstep ahead of Thursday's Cotswold District Council by-election.

But Paul Hodgkinson, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Gloucestershire County Council, said people 'deserve better'.

“The report is damning," he said.

"It lists failures of leadership, a drinking culture in No 10 Downing Street and evidence of multiple parties during lockdown.

"In the Cotswolds so many of us followed the rules to the letter in the belief that those in power nationally were doing the same.

"There cannot be one rule for them and one rule for the rest of us.

"In a letter to Geoffrey Clifton-Brown three weeks ago I called on him to press the Prime Minister to resign but sadly I’ve had no response.

"Enough is enough – the Government is paralysed and we deserve better.”

Leader of the Conservative group on Cotswold District Council, Tony Berry, was more sympathetic towards the Prime Minister.

"Who would we have if we didn't have Boris?

"He's done a good job in many respects and although this is damaging and hurtful it's been ramped up by people who don't like him."
