A RESCUE DOG who has fought back from meningitis has become the mascot for a Gloucestershire charity’s latest fundraising campaign.

Macey, a five-year-old lurcher, who is currently being cared for near the Stroud-based head office of Meningitis Now, will be the ambassador for the charity’s new virtual event, WAG Off Meningitis (Walk and Give), starting in October.

Staff at the charity were moved by Macey’s story and wanted to do something to make her feel special.

And today Meningitis Now Community Fundraisers Leah Wynn and Sophia Lanciano visited Macey at her foster home to say hello and present her with a personalised Meningitis Now dog bandanna.

Sophia said: “We were so sorry to hear that Macey had been ill with meningitis – many people do not realise that dogs can get this devastating disease too.

“It’s so good that she has made such a good recovery thanks to the wonderful care she’s received from her foster carer Ali Robinson and the Forever Hounds Trust.

“It seemed only fitting that as a locally-based charity we should join forces with Macey to fight back against this disease and we’re delighted to have her on the team as the face of our new campaign.”

Wag Off Meningitis builds on the success of the charity’s recent Jog On Meningitis, a virtual event where people grab their trainers and run, jog or walk 50km over 50 days and raise £50 in sponsorship. The idea is that now people can take part in a similar event alongside their dog.

“The important part” Sophia added “is that every penny raised will help us save lives and rebuild the futures of those affected by meningitis.

“That’s a good enough reason to put a spring in any step and a wag in every tail.”

Ali Robinson, who has been caring for Macey while a forever home is found, added: “Macey is a very sweet and loving lurcher who is looking for a home of her own.

“At the moment she has us very well trained to provide at least three major hugs a day.

“Macey enjoys her walks and is gradually increasing her fitness again. She is becoming more confident daily.

“She will add sparkle and joy to anyone’s life and will make the most amazing pet.”

Meningitis Now is working towards a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need.

It does this by funding research into vaccines and prevention, raising awareness so people know what to look for and what action to take if they suspect meningitis and rebuilding futures by providing dedicated support to people living with the impact of the disease.
