SCORCHING conditions will prolong what is expected to be the longest heatwave in the UK's history as Britain looks set to experience the hottest weekend so far this year.
Weather models suggest temperatures could reach 35C prompting warning from Public Health England (PHE) for Britons to 'stay out of the sun'.
In fact, the Met Office with PHE upgraded the heat health alert to level-3 yesterday which means we are just one step below a national emergency.
As things stand, temperatures have reached or exceeded 28C for 11 days in a row and if this trend continues beyond the 19-day mark the heatwave record set in August, 1997 will be broken, the Met Office say.
A spokesman from the national weather service said: "Looking at the forecasts for the next week, we have got high pressure building and it is certainly possible we will see these values.
"We are predicting a prolonged period of fine, dry, warm and often hot weather with hardly any rain apart from perhaps the odd shower."
