England have moved into the quarter-finals of the World Cup after beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties, following a 1 - 1 draw in normal time.

In beating the team from South America, Gareth Southgate's side won the country's first World Cup penalty shoot-out in history.

Below our reporter Ross Arnott takes a look at the individual performances on the night.

Jordan Pickford – 10

Any goalkeeper who wins his team a penalty shoot-out needs a 10. England’s youngest ever tournament keeper is certainly making the position his own. Also produced a potential save of the tournament at the end of normal time before the Colombia equaliser.

Kieran Trippier – 8

Besides Harry Kane, Trippier has been the most influential player for England at this World Cup. Defended when he needed to but also provides great attacking threat as well. Brilliant penalty in the shoot-out to draw us level.

Kyle Walker – 7

A big lapse in concentration near the end of normal time almost saw Juan Cuadrado score for Colombia. His pace at the back is vital for covering and plugging holes whilst we are on the attack.

John Stones – 7

Really influential in the centre of this back three. Provides great composure on the ball, which as yet has not been fully tested. He is integral to the tempo of England’s game.

Harry Maguire – 8

His best game in and England shirt. Brought the ball out from the back with slide rule passes into the final third. This really helped to pose an attacking threat for England deep into extra time. Could have had a goal if it was not for a brilliant touch from Colombia’s Davinson Sanchez.

Ashley Young – 7

The thought of a right footed player at left-back is a worry, but Ashley Young is doing a solid job. He is slightly lacking in attacking threat due to some predictability in his play however. Danny Rose is a much better option going forward.

Jordan Henderson – 8

Absolutely brilliant for England, would have had a 9 were it not for the saved penalty in the shoot-out. Runs all day long and is looking forward with more passes than he has done in previous outings in an England shirt.

Dele Alli – 7

The Tottenham man has struggled at times this season, and it looks as though he has carried hints of that into this tournament. Having said that, he produced a solid display to be an attacking threat, but also to help Young with the threat of the aforementioned Cuadrado and Santiago Arias. Does Ruben Loftus-Cheek offer more?

Jesse Lingard – 7

Solid performance from this man, he has carried his hard-working performances for Manchester United over to his national side superbly. He can be really integral for the attacking play of this side.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Another game the Manchester City man has struggled in, he just wasn’t able to get that involved in the play. His control in tight areas has definitely improved, but he hasn’t found himself in many positions to score goals. Will he start the next game against Sweden?

Harry Kane – 9

Another star performance from this man, his runs in the box at corners are unstoppable. Our captain is now the clear front runner for the top goal scorer award, with 6 goals in just 3 matches. His hold up play and the fouls he won were integral to England winning this game. Great penalty in the shoot-out as well. Our talisman.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford -7

Came on and dispatched an emphatic penalty in the shoot-out. Shows the confidence this promising youngster has. Could find himself in a starting position for the next game in place of Sterling potentially.

Eric Dier – 7

Another player who played his part in the shoot-out. Didn’t have the easiest time when he came on in normal time, but he was able to keep his cool from the spot to help write England football history.

Danny Rose – 6

Is a greater attacking threat than Young at left back, shown by the chance he created with his burst into the box in extra-time. Another player who could still find himself in the starting line-up for the match against Sweden on Saturday.

Jamie Vardy -6

Struggles to really get involved, didn’t take a penalty which was surprising. There will be more times that we can exploit his speed on the counter at this tournament.

England will now play Sweden in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 3PM, after they beat Switzerland earlier in the day. The prize for the winners is a place in the semi-finals where they will meet Croatia or hosts Russia.
