PUPILS at a Cricklade school are taking part in the National Fiver Challenge this month.

Year 4 pupils at Meadowpark School are joining schools across England and Wales in the challenge that runs until June 29.

For the challenge, each child is given a £5 investment, with the aim to make as much profit as possible.

The objective of the challenge is to engage children in an enterprise real-work experience

Teacher Adam Rush explains: "This project will allow the children to apply knowledge they have gained from vast areas of the curriculum, such as keeping a very careful track of their money to avoid such pitfalls as over-spending, and using persuasive language to encourage students and parents alike to part with their money."

Children have formed two companies called 'Rubics' and ‘Sweet Treats'.

Snacks and gifts are a few of the items that the children are researching.

For each product, the Fiver Challenge encourages the children to think about the costs of making the product, marketing elements, sales pitch, and creating an ‘shop’ to attract customers.

"They also need to learn to work as a team and organise themselves carefully outside of the classroom, including such tasks as buying supplies," Adam added.

The ‘pop-up’ market will be held on Thursday, June 28 where pupils will be able to sell their products to the Meadowpark community.

This is the second year that Meadowpark has participated in the Fiver Challenge and with the enthusiasm that the children have shown, the Fiver Challenge is said to be quickly becoming a favourite event.
