THREE police officers were injured after Waitrose in Cirencester was raided this morning.

A cash machine was stolen and two police vehicles were rammed at the store around 3am by the offenders who were wearing balaclavas. 

Cirencester residents reported hearing police helicopters around 4am.
Significant damage was caused to the store but thankfully none of the staff working overnight were injured.

The injuries sustained by the officers were minor however the vehicles sustained extensive damage. 

Although the store opened for business that morning, police tape remained in place around a large smashed window at the front of the store. 

Crime scene investigators could still be seen searching for evidence. A loose registration plate and part of a cash machine was also found on the floor.

Cotswold Inspector Karen Ellis said: “Officers were on the scene within minutes of this taking place and police vehicles were damaged as a result of the offenders trying to get away.

“We appreciate this will be alarming for the community and please do come to us if you have any concerns. Call police on 101 if you have any information relating to this incident.”

A Waitrose spokesman said: “We are grateful to the police for their swift response and our partners for their efforts in ensuring we could welcome our customers as normal. We will continue to support the police with their investigation.” 

The incident caused shock to members of the public. One shopper, Colin Young said: “I’m a bit shocked really. This seems to be becoming a regular thing in this area. It’s an easy target that’s the trouble but it’s shocking to see." 

Another shopper added: “They must be pretty desperate to do that, it must shake everybody up.

Police have asked anyone with any information which could help with enquiries should call police on 101 and quote incident 36 of June 20.
