WHILE I have every sympathy for blind campaigners concerning the hazards for them in Cirencester’s town centre, I have to agree with Andrew Tubb that ‘there are kerbs throughout the town centre’ (Wilts and Glos Standard, May 24).

What I do take issue with is Andrew Tubb’s other statement that ‘calling this a shared space was to raise awareness that pedestrians and cyclists now have priority’.

I don’t know whether he walks around much in that ‘shared space’, but, given the well-defined road marking and the step kerbs, car drivers certainly do not cede priority to pedestrians.

This is understandable since there are two pedestrian crossings which imply that the rest of the roads through the centre are for vehicle priority.

What is needed is larger and more obvious signage making the priority for pedestrians and cyclists clear to all vehicles at the start of the ‘Shared Space’.
