THE Delta Airlines Rising Star award has been won by Gloucester's Jack Hamblett at the HRH Prince of Wales, Prince's Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Awards national final.

Jack, 21, was presented the award alongside the Prince of Wales, who resides in Highgrove (Tetbury), Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad and actress Olivia Colman.

Ant & Dec hosted the event at the London Palladium on March 6 which also saw the likes of Tom Hardy, Sir Rod and Lady Stewart, Spice Girl Melanie Chisolm and former footballer Thierry Henry all attend.

The awards ceremony recognises disadvantaged young people who have succeeded against the odds, improved their chances in life and had a positive impact on their local community.

Jack's childhood has been unstable. The loss of his mother and step-father had an effect on his mental health as depression and behaviour caused problems in his family life.

Despite his inner demons, Jack was able to complete his A-Levels and found work but the death of a close friend brought further difficulties which lead him to seek support.

"I was devastated by his death," he said. "In the space of a year I lost my step-dad and mum to cancer, then my dog died so my mental health took a massive nose-dive at that point.

"I thought of my friend. His life had ended too soon and I realised how precious life is so I started seeking help from support services and signed up to The Prince’s Trust Team programme.

"Team gave me a structure and taught me to listen and respect other people’s opinions instead of judging and discriminating.

"I used to think I'd never make it to my 21st birthday, but I've passed that milestone and The Prince’s Trust has always been there for me. Everyone there who has supported me is amazing. They kept my head stable and made me see what is important in life.

Jack, who works as a support worker in a residential home for adults with complex needs, was overjoyed to have won the award and is thankful to the Prince's Trust for their support.

"I’m so humbled to be the winner of this award, it’s incredible. I’ve had so much support from family, friends and The Prince’s Trust so I’d like to say thank you to everyone who’s helped me along the way.”"
